Welcome !

Welcome Troop 23 Scouts and Parents! This web site exists to serve the Scouts and parents of Troop 23. It contains information about upcoming events and is also used for event sign-ups. We also provide links to other Scouting-related sites and use it as a repository for useful documents such as packing lists, camping recipes, and campfire songs. A weekly Scout Blast email will continue to go out, although it will now be generated automatically from the contents of this site. You can still expect some out-of-band emails from Troop leadership as we continue to get used to this new format. If this is the first time you've logged in, please take a few minutes to update your profile by clicking on the "My Profile" link in the upper left-hand corner of the page. Please provide at least a home phone and cell phone. Only Troop leadership will have access to this information. If you have any questions or suggestions from improving this website, please Contact Us. Yours in Scouting! Troop 23

Scout Religious Award

Posted on Jun 6 2021 - 12:10pm

Scouts who are active in their faith community are eligible to earn their affiliation's religious award.  The requirements for the religious awards vary quite widely depending upon the religious affiliation. Most awards are done on a personal basis between the Scout, the Family, and the religious leader. Some require the progression through the award under the direction of clergy (or person appointed by clergy). Some awards can be earned in a matter of weeks; others take several months to complete. Scouts earning their religious award typically receive a medal (usually presented at a religious gathering) and a knot for their uniform. The full list of religious awards can be found here: http://www.scouting.org/awards/religious-awards/chart/. Any Scout interested in learning more should contact Mr. McCoy, the Troop Chaplain, at brad.mccoy@westpoint.edu; please make sure there is at least one other adult on the email (parent is fine).

NYLT Opportunity

Posted on May 23 2021 - 2:02pm

The Council is holding its annual National Youth Leader Training session this summer from 8-14 August. NYLT is not “summer camp.” It’s an intense, week-long leadership course for experienced Scouts, Venturers, and Sea Scouts. As the second step in BSA’s Youth Leader development program, NYLT provides youth the opportunity to develop executive-level leadership skills that they need to be truly effective both in Scouts and later in life. It is one of the most advanced youth leader trainings that Scouting offers. The troop can send up to 2 Scouts to attend, with additional interested Scouts being waitlisted. A Scout attending NYLT will be expected to run for SPL within a year of attending. Cost of the event is $325; a scholarship may be available. Scouts who are interested in attending should contact Mr. Griff by 9 June. See attached flyer for more info.

Troop 23 Masking Guidance (as of 23 May)

Posted on May 23 2021 - 1:56pm
With the safety and well-being of our Scouts and Adults as our paramount concern, below is how we will implement the current masking guidelines based on some key points of the Scout Law. Please note that the requirement for social distancing, including individual tenting, remains in effect per DoD and NYS guidelines.
  • A SCOUT IS OBEDIENT. Non-vaccinated Scouts or Adults will wear masks at Troop indoor and outdoor activities. Vaccinated Scouts or Adults who are two weeks past their final dose may choose not to wear masks at indoor and outdoor activities at the family's discretion. All Scouts and Adults will carry masks on outings away from West Point so we can comply with local mask mandates.
  • A SCOUT IS TRUSTWORTHY. Scouts and Adults will be relied upon to accurately represent their vaccination status. Proof of vaccination will not be required at troop events. Issues arising from this will be referred to the troop Key 3 (Scoutmaster, Committee Chair, and Commissioner) for action.
  • A SCOUT IS COURTEOUS. Scouts and Adults will recognize that some individuals and families may prefer to maintain masking even after being vaccinated. Individuals will not be questioned about a decision to wear a mask.

Please feel free to contact Mr. Griff or Mr. Kimball with questions or concerns.
